Cash on delivery at pickup points

Offer cash on delivery (COD) at pickup points and charge a COD fee for it. Each carrier gets two shipping rates in Shopify: a regular one and a COD one whose price includes the fee. The customer picks a pickup point in the cart widget, checkout shows both rates for that point, and your payment app offers cash on delivery only on the COD rate.

Shopify can’t add a fee to a payment method. The usual way around it is a separate shipping rate with the COD fee included in its price, for example “Packeta pickup point (COD)”. A payment app such as Payflow then shows the Cash on Delivery payment method only when the customer picks a rate whose name contains the COD keyword.

When a customer selects a pickup point in the cart, Globe keeps one shipping rate for that point at checkout and hides the others. The COD rate would be hidden too. COD keywords tell Globe which rates are COD variants, so both the regular and the COD rate stay visible.

Step 1: Create two shipping rates per carrier in Shopify

Section titled “Step 1: Create two shipping rates per carrier in Shopify”

In Shopify admin (Settings → Shipping and delivery), add two rates to the shipping zone for each pickup point carrier:

  • Regular rate, e.g. “Packeta pickup point”
  • COD rate with a COD keyword in its name, e.g. “Packeta pickup point (COD)”. Its price is the shipping price plus the COD fee.

Example with shipping at 3.90 EUR, free shipping from 50 EUR and a COD fee of 1.50 EUR:

RateOrders below 50 EUROrders from 50 EUR
Packeta pickup point3.90 EUR0 EUR
Packeta pickup point (COD)5.40 EUR1.50 EUR

Set the two price levels with order amount tiers in each rate (Rate type → Order amount).

Use a keyword that never appears in the names of your regular rates, for example COD, dobírka, utánvét or pobranie.

Step 2: Map both rates to the carrier in Globe

Section titled “Step 2: Map both rates to the carrier in Globe”

Open the carrier in Globe and select both shipping rates under its shipping methods. Globe recognizes a rate as the carrier’s rate only when it is mapped, so an unmapped COD rate is hidden once the customer selects a point. See Adding pickup point carriers.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for every carrier where you offer COD.

Step 3: Turn on delivery customization and add the COD keywords

Section titled “Step 3: Turn on delivery customization and add the COD keywords”

In Globe, go to Settings → Cart Widget → Checkout delivery customization:

  1. Turn on Enable delivery customization.
  2. In COD shipping method keywords, enter your keyword, e.g. COD. Separate several keywords with commas, e.g. COD, dobírka, utánvét. The match is not case sensitive and the keyword can be anywhere in the rate name.
  3. Leave Rename delivery method to pickup point name and Hide other delivery methods on (both are on by default).

The cart widget has to be enabled in your theme, because the customization works from the pickup point selected in the cart.

Step 4: Show the COD payment method only on COD rates

Section titled “Step 4: Show the COD payment method only on COD rates”

In your payment app, show Cash on Delivery only for shipping rates whose name contains the same keyword. In Payflow, follow the Cash on Delivery setup.

The customer selects a pickup point in the cart. At checkout, that point is offered twice:

  • Z-BOX Bratislava, Obchodná 2: 3.90 EUR
  • Z-BOX Bratislava, Obchodná 2 (COD): 5.40 EUR

With Rename delivery method to pickup point name turned on, the regular rate shows the point name (or your rename template) and the COD rate shows the same followed by the keyword in brackets, exactly as you entered it in Globe. The keyword stays in the name, so the payment app still recognizes the COD rate. With renaming off, both rates keep their Shopify names.

Customers who skip the cart (the Buy Now button, express checkout) don’t select a point in the cart. Checkout then shows all rates under their Shopify names, including the COD ones, and the customer selects the pickup point after the order on the Thank You and Order Status page.

Only one rate appears for the selected point

  • The COD keyword in Globe must be part of the COD rate’s name in Shopify.
  • The COD rate must be mapped to the carrier in Globe (Step 2).

The COD payment method doesn’t appear

  • The payment app must look for the keyword, not the full rate name. With renaming on, the rate is called “point name (keyword)” at checkout, not “Packeta pickup point (COD)”.
